Report from the Launch

This is a brief report from the committee on the Launch of Deaf Women North West.

We were delighted to see over 70 Deaf women at the launch on Friday 6th June at Badger's Bar, Derry. The women travelled from all corners of Ireland and all of us there appreciate the support shown by everyone.

The large turnout of local Deaf women proved that the group is much needed.

Deaf women need time out from their every day lives to meet in an environment where they can have fun, socialise, share experiences and learn about issues that affect us in our everyday lives in our own languages - British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language.

Please see the next posting about the programme of events for 2008/ 2009.

Thanks must go to:
  • All of the ladies who brought wine to share with others
  • To Avril Scott who made a yummy Launch Cake
  • To Michaela McFadden for her hard work in getting prizes and gifts
  • To the Irish Dancers who gave a dazzling display
  • Dee Byrne Dunne who shared the experiences of the Irish Deaf Women's Group (and the girls who came from Dublin)
  • The committee of the Limerick Deaf Women's Group for the beautiful gifts for DWNW
  • Staff of Badgers Bar who looked after us very well!
  • Carphone Warehouse for the donation of a mobile phone for DWNW
  • Body Shop, Boots, Debenhams & Marks and Spencer, for donations of prizes
  • Annette O'Doherty for helping with the raffle and taking photos
  • Most importantly - to all of the ladies who came along on the night and made it fun!

See you all on 25th July!

Launch Update

Hi girls!

The latest on the launch of the Deaf Women North West Group ...

1. We are expecting about 70 - 80 (possibly more) Deaf women from all corners of Ireland to come to the launch. We have over 30 women from Dublin, 7 from Limerick, some from Monaghan, Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland.

We look forward to seeing you all!

2. The venue is STILL at the Badger's Bar on the 1st floor (there will be stairs to get to the function room). The function room holds about 100 people so please do let us know if you are coming and not yet informed us as we would not want to turn women away that have travelled far! (See below posting for address of the Badgers Bar).

3. We will have cheese and wine (free) but other drinks will be paid for by yourselves. Please don't forget to bring Sterling for drinks and raffle!

Have a safe trip to Derry and see you all on Friday!

Welcome to this temporary website for Deaf Women North West.

Michaela McFadden and Dawn Marshall organised an open meeting for Deaf women who wanted to set up a Deaf Women's group on Friday 11th April 2008 at the Diamond Room, Millennium Forum, Derry, Northern Ireland.

Stephen Dering of Dering Employment Services kindly donated £50 towards refreshments and the Millennium Forum kindly let us use their room free of charge.

These are the women who formed this new group. Well done to all!

These women gave lots of ideas for how the group should be set up and run. After a long discussion, and a lot of choices, the women agreed that the name of the group should be Deaf Women North West. The group is open to any Deaf woman living in Ireland and that includes both Northern and Southern Ireland!

A new committee has been elected. (See * next to name). The group is now writing a constitution and applying for funding. So far there have been £90 raised through Dering Employment Services and a raffle on the night which raised £40!

The next event is Friday 6th June (venue to be confirmed). This will be a cheese and wine event to launch the group. Any Deaf woman is welcome!

Please keep coming back to this website for more information.

You can add comments below if you would like to ask the committee any questions.

Thank you!
